Btw my india
number is +919679889238 ( I think…or its 9679889238 plus the india code)

After a stressful first week at school, Kate and I managed
to “escape” to Darjeeling
to see Mike, Pete, James, Jen and Katie for a day or chilling, beer, good food
and brilliant company. We found a lovely little place called Glenarys – quite
western, but to be honest I think that tat was what we were all wanting by this
point!

We got the bus (eventually) from outside our school to
Kurseong (Rs.15/) very bumpy ride, but it’s not too long and has some
incredible views! When in Kurseong we looked about for a taxi – people were
quoting us Rs.900/ to Darjeeling
and we’d been told not to pay for more than Rs.50/!!!!! Eventually a nice old
man, with very good English pointed us in the right direction and Kate and I
squashed ourselves into the back of a share taxi (14people in one jeep!!) –
2hours later, and several bumped heads (the roads here are AWFUL) we arrived in
Darjeeling. It
was dark, and we had NO idea where we were, but the others met us at the train
station and took us for a little “tour”. We then plonked ourselves in Glenarys,
had some food an cold beer and had a good old natter!

Eventually (at about 10) it was kicking out time and we
started, slowly, to make our way back to the Sham Rock (very nice hotel that
was recommended to us). But not without a few hiccups!! First – James was
unable to hold his drink (about 3beers at such an altitude, and puked. Into his
fleece. It wasn’t pretty, and he’ll never live it down! Then…a little further
along the road we lost Mike and Pete – apparently a local called Sam took them
to an underground bar that continued to stay open after 10!! By this point it
was Pete’s turn to puke. And duly he did. Twice. Once out of a bathroom window
– why he didn’t just use the toilet I don’t know!! But Pete had an excuse…he
was…”spiked” (I think this is a metaphor for weak stomached =S )  Very funny. Sleep was consequently very good!

In the morning we gazed at Kangchenjunga over a breakfast of
fried egg, tomatoes, toast and coffee (very different to the curry and rice
that we’re used to!) and then pottered about taking in  the sights and doing a bit of shopping! Have
found a lovely internet café also – which is brilliant =) and cheap!!!

Darjeeling
is lovely, all hilly and full of happy people and colourful stalls! The views
are also breath taking! Hopefully will get up to Tiger Hill at some point and
will be able to get an amazing 360 view of the Himalayas!
There’s also talk of going white water rafting near Kalimpong and doing a trek
to the base camp of Kangchenjunga! All fun stuff to look forward to!!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^Has now been
upstaged^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This weekend we arrived on Friday, as we had to register our
passports. After meeting up with some of the other volunteers (Rachel, Elf,
Cassi, Fabienne, Mike, Pete and James) we did all the boring admin associated
with being in India, the girls (not me) went to get saree’s (VERY VERY
beautiful) and we found a jem of a hotel called “silver cascade” right next to
a place called “hotel tranquility” which is in the lonely planet guide. It’s
amazing. We have comfy beds, hot water (24hour), en suite bathroom, balcony and
tv – all for Rs.150/ (just over 2pounds!!) After another dinner at glenarys
(sweet and sour vegetables and a garlic naan) meeting some nice people who were
drugs testing diarrhea patches and arm wrestling with locals,  we trundled up the BIGGEST HILL YOU’VE EVER
SEEN, back to our hotel.

So…we’re jamming in the guys room with music…next thing I
know Elf’s fallen over and chipped half her tooth off and is requesting some
Bob Marley!….Moments later someones tried to shut the balcony door and it’s
come off its hinges and the top window has smashed EVERYWHERE! No a clue what
happened…clearly it wasn’t our evening!

And now…here I am! So all is good and enjoyable! Still need
to get some essentials (hair brush, vitamins, chocolate) but all in good time!

But yes…much love to everyone!!

Darjeeling, India>, Mar 01, 2010

So! The placement begins! We were welcomed by our host, bundled into his car and set off up the hill…not for long! We got a puncture about 2km from New Jalpaiguri station…!! But luckily it was quickly fixed and we were back on our way! Through the forest, and up the winding, bumpy, pot holed road, every now and again being violently shaken about as the car navigated it’s way over the Himalayan Railway tracks that snake their way along and across the  road up to Ghayabari!

The views are beautiful, but it is a little bit scary just how close you drive to the edge of the road ” constantly thinking that you might be joining the views in a very ungraceful and messy way! After passing through many villages we stopped at Thindaria ” where Regal Academy (a branch school of Blue Diamond) is. Here we were greeted by all the children (playgroup, nursery, kg and class 1) and were given Nepalese scarves ” they indicate respect! After this brief stop we continued for another 5km to the Blue Diamond English Boarding School! Here we were greeted by the whole school clapping, and lined up outside the school! Several of the older boarders kindly took our bags, and we proceeded down the uneven, stone steps towards the school where we met all the teachers and Mrs Thapa ” and were given a shawl! Very pretty and warm!!

We were then shown to our room ” very nice! 2 beds and an en-suite bathroom with cold shower head and western toilet (no paper…as is customary in India!). The walls are adorned with pictures of all the previous volunteers (a little imposing) and we found a suitcase full of resources, and a guide book that the past volunteers had written for us! After having a short nap we had dinner ” curry and momos (vegetable dumplings) and then went back to bed!

On Tuesday 2nd March we were taken in to Kurseong by Mr Thapa to get some towels, scarves and all important mobile phones ” alas the internet was down! Bought phones…and sim cards…which didn’t work. After much faffing about we eventually changed  sim cards and were ready to get our timetables and start to plan some lessons! Teaching began tomorrow! In the evening we got to know the boarders a little better ” about 14 or so boys and about 6girls who all live with the Thapa’s in the “basement” of the school!

First week of teaching was hard. Discipline is a big issue ” especially with the dreaded class 2!! Their only form of negative sanction is the cane ” which is wholly un-useful for us as we wont hit the kids! Have resorted to asking other teachers to tell them off, using fierce tones of voice and making them stand against the wall (with limited success!)

Slowly but surely Kate and I are getting the hang of it! The discipline isn’t sure a big issue in the little school (Regal Academy) ”  they’re quite mental at times, but there are always other teachers  about!

One day, when at regal academy I got bundled in to the school bus, rather than the usual Siliguri ” Kurseong bus, only to get round the corner and be told that he wouldn’t be moving until 1!! This was NO good at all as I needed  to start teaching then! So, after several failed attemps and 2 buses passing us, a big Swaraj Mazda goods truck agreed to take me ” I was a little unsure, but there was another woman in the front and they seemed nice enough! [there’s a massive transport problem in Ghayabari because of a short cut road that goes through Rohini and misses it out so trucks often double up as taxis…or sorts]  So I got in, it was a bit (very) squashed, and the guy next to me kept trying to look at my book and fiddling with my watch and occasionally putting his arm a little too close to me…but this is the Indian way! …going along nicely…and then it stops, in the middle of nowhere and everyone gets out…I tried to ask what was going on but the Nepali/English language barrier was too much…eventually managed to get on another bus…and an hour and 5km later I was home! Have to admit I was wondering if I was just going to end up as a headline “British Volunteer Lost in the Hills”…=( but no fame for me this time!

Other stuff:

  • Been to 2 Indian wedding receptions (just meet and greet and get some foood)
  • Hill walks
  • Getting to know the boarders and playing with them
  • Making roti in the morning (flat bread)
  • Being squished on a bus

Anywho!! Will tell more about life, and Darjeeling later!

Much love

xxx

Ahmedabad, India>, Mar 09, 2010

I was happy to see the surprise on Mr Rude’s face when I checked out of the hotel the next morning. I didn’t show animosity towards him, I didn’t want to give him the pleasure. Although honesty is generally a good policy, I also think people need to work things out for themselves sometimes. Especially people who work in industries which require you to understand people, like tourism. Rude hotel owners the world over need to understand that the success of their business comes down to customer service - so many fail to see that and the conntempt they show towards their guests is all too clear.

I decided to get the local RSRTC bus to Ahmedabad at 10am. It was only a tiny bit cheaper than the private buses at INR 121 (£1.70/$3), but they’re no better really and these locals buses are perfectly comfortable. It was a slow journey with plenty of stops, and I could certainly feel the temperature again as we descended from the hill station down onto the dusty plains again. I’ll have to get used to it again, its only going to get warmer the further south I go! We arrived into Ahmedabad on time just after 4pm. The bus station is a few kilometres from the city centre, so I grabbed a three-wheeler (INR 20) to Hotel Good Night. I knew the prices in Ahmedabad were a little higher as there’s not much budget accomodation, so I accepted a room for INR 450 (£6/$10) a night. It was nice, clean and comfortable though and for the first time in a while, there wasn’t anything to criticise about the room! I had a quick wander about before it got dark and then had a lovely Chicken Tikka Masala in the restaurant downstairs (Food Inn).

Ahmedabad isn’t a massively exciting city, but I wandered round for a day taking it in. Its biggest claim to fame I guess is that it is where Gandhi’s Free India movement started back in the early part of the 20th century. I visited the Sabarmati Ashram (free entry) which was the spiritual community that Gandhi set up with the aim of gaining support and belief for India’s independence from the British. Its a great and humbling place to walk round (especially as a Brit) and you can easily imagine how the group lived here. There are plenty of displays outlining the struggle and the determination with which Gandhi peacefully fought the occupiers - ‘non violence’ he called it. He finally succeded when India gained independence on 15th August 1947, although sadly he was assassinated less than a year later. He’s still revered today as a ’saint’ and its not hard to see why when you understand what he did for the country. The Gujaratis of Ahmedabad are especially proud, it all started here…

There is always more to see#8230;.
Sometimes, the basics are fine, especially if it#8217;s a first-time visit or you don#8217;t have a particularly deep interest in a destination or attraction.
Sometimes, though, you want to know a lot more than the broad-brush overview from walking around reading placards, and for that there are behind the scenes tours.

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam>, Mar 12, 2010

Phở is served in a bowl with white rice noodles in clear broth with thin cuts of meat (beef or chicken, but I read that recent variations inlucde ostrich or clams).  It is a Vietnamese dish and like other typical Vietnamese meals, it is served with lots of greens, herbs, vegetables and various other accompaniments such as dipping sauces, hot and spicy pastes, and flavor enhancements like a squeeze of lime or lemon.

My very first Pho bowl was in Manila, but when I tasted the authentic, truely vietnamese kind, I quickly developed a craving for it (like my friends whom I visited in Saigon-HCMC)!  My friends, Rinna & Roach, who lived temporarily in Ho Chi Minh City at the time, were crazy over a certain pho restaurant along Pasteur St.  Guess how many times we went to Pasteur during my visit, haha!

Pho Hoa Pasteur St  is the most popular pho restaurant in HCMC (as I’ve read and heard from friends), and I’m proud to say, now I know why!  It’s something not to be missed when traveling here.

A ’small’ bowl (there is a larger bowl) of Pho Tai (Phở bò tái) is what I ordered.  It’s Pho with half-done beef fillet (and it has to be served really hot for the beef to cook, best practice, better to be safe than sorry).  I placed quotation marks on the ’small’ because it’s LARGE for me!  I don’t think I’ve ever finished the whole bowl whenever I ordered… and whenever I do, it seems like I don’t feel hungry for the rest of the day- a bowl of Pho goes a long way! ;)  …and for only something like <30k Dong (about 70Php or US$1.50), imagine!

This part I found very amusing: On every table you’ll find a plate of breadsticks, a three herb plate (fresh!), beansprouts (the biggest I’ve seen!), sliced chilis, lemons, a plate of savoury snacks, hot and spicy pastes, etc.  I don’t know about you, but I’m the type who likes to fix and add-a-dash-of-this-and-a-dash-of-that before I actually start eating.  So you can say that I was actually in condiment heaven! :D Ha ha!

How to eat Pho:  Makes use of what you see on the table, it’s worth trying!…  The bread, traditionally, is dipped in the soup- and I’ve seen some locals tear it into small pieces and drop it in their soup. It actually tastes good, wet or dry.  The mint leaves and other greens that you can drop in your bowl make a huge difference in the taste.  It’s up to you how much you want to put in your soup.

One downside I have to say is, once you’ve tasted the authentic-Vietnam-Pho, you’ll never be truely (100%) satisfied with any of the Vietnamese restaurants in your local area. ;)

Penang, Malaysia>, Mar 12, 2010

I like the fact that Georgetown has a free shuttle that takes people around touristy sites. I wil definitely avail of this. First off, I need to get breakfast. Will update this later.

5:30pm update:

For breakfast, I just walked one block from my hotel, and viola I found some hawker stalls! I had some Chinese keow seow? (I have to confirm the sp on this), basically it’s flat noodles with shrimp and spices on it (very yummy!), a cup of kopi (see, now I drink coffee only when I travel), and a kaya toast. Kaya I think it’s the latik (sweet sauce) from coconut. That was for RM7.50, about almost US$2.50.

After breakfast: I went back to the hotel, checked out from the RM58 room, to a single bed RM28.00. See, I didn’t know they have this type of room. It has centralized a/c. My room last night, the expensive one, has its own a/c and it was blazing cold that at some point I had to turn it off! It has its own bathroom, queen-sized bed and a TV with only 1 channel that was showing a scary movie! Not something I’d like to do on my vacation.

At the free bus shuttle station: I started asking this guy at the station if this is the right stop, and he said something incomprehensible to me. A Moslem lady was also waiting for the MPP bus, she joined in the conversation and the next thing I know, she was willing to take me around touristy sites in Penang! I said “Seriously? Aren’t you going somewhere? Don’t you have anything to do today?”

She said not to worry about her, she’s retired, and she just wants to take a break from cooking for her kids, and just want to walk around. Hmmn. Well, she sounds like a nice lady, and with caution I thought, what do I get to lose? Our first stop was actually right there, Ft Cornwalls, across the bus stop!

Amina, that’s her name, she mentioned she has never been to the Fort after living in Penang for 30 years! Oh wow, so we gotta go! I was busy taking pictures of the entrance and the next thing she said, “I already paid for your entrance fee”. It’s like ‘oh no, you don’t have to do this. How much did you pay?” She refused the payment and we proceeded on touring the Fort.

Fort Cornwalls was built when Captain Francis Light first landed on Penang. This ancient sentinel of George Town stands guard over the island’s cape. We saw a prison cell, a few cannons facing Malacca Strait, a little Catholic church, plus a few sites that I forgot.

We talked a lot, I learned that she worked for the Malaysian govt for 30 years, and she’s only 50 something years old. She’s been retired since 1996, in her 40s!

Then we also walked by the Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower, a 60 ft tower built in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Each foot represents a year in Queen’s reign.

We keep walking and she thought we would take a ferry to Butterworth, and not get off the ferry. I thought that was refreshing. From the brochure, Penang Ferry started operations in 1920, making it the oldest ferry service in Malaysia. These iconic ferries ply between the Sebang Perai mainland and Penang Island, carrying both passengers and vehicles. It’s just like WA State ferries, except the Malaysian ferries are colorful!

As we said goodbye, she showed me the buses to the airport from the ferry terminal. We parted at Comptar Station, and where I had my lunch of shrimp beehon and mixed fruit and melon kachang. Pics to be posted sometime as soon as I get my mac plugged in again.

Then I went to visit 3 Asian temples. Bus 101 took me to the first one which was something not in my plan. I will tell you its name once I see it from my photos :)

The 2nd temple I visited was Wat Chayamangkalaram - very impressive! It’s a Thai buddhist temple built in 1845 on land granted by Queen Victoria as a gesture of goodwill to Thailand. That must be nice to be presented with a temple, I would be flattered myself if someone offered me a temple :) But I guess you have to really special.
This temple has one of the largest reclining buddha statues in the world. Spectacular to behold, the statue is completely gold-plated and measures 33 meters in length.

Across the street (which I really thankful for so I don’t have to walk or take a bus!), is the Burmese temple. This is also along Lorong Burma. It’s always the favored venue for the Songkoran festivities - Thailand’s traditional festivities. Buddhist monks were there too, and I chatted with them about meditation. The temple also features a Bodhi tree, wishing pong, a 200 yr old well, and a pagoda.

I was afraid I will miss the last trip for the free shuttle in Comptar so I called it a day.

Penang, Malaysia>, Mar 12, 2010

I woke up at 430am today, mainly because I went to bed early. Today, I plan to fly to KL, but flights look full until 1800. I will check again. Also, 2 of my lodging plans have failed, which means I need to find a room for myself. I looked at rooms last night, and it was very dismal, a lot of them are booked on Saturday nights.

Perhaps I should stay one more day in Penang? I dont’ know, but I would end up one day only in KL. Is one day enough? I don’t think so. Since I have 6 hours to kill, maybe I’ll bus to see that CHinese temple outside town, or bus to the beach - Batu Ferenghi. It is supossed to be the Cancun of Penang. We’ll see, will update later.

Bangkok, Thailand>, Mar 12, 2010

enjoy a late breakfast, or lunch here…
It’s not a restaurant but more a burner, a freezer en two tables under the porch of a house on the grounds of the Wat Tha Phra.
If you can’t find it, just walk to the back and it should be on your left in the back corner.. you can always just ask 4 Lai.
I love it so because na Lai is just great and makes real thai food, the fried rice in all combinations and if she still has crispy porc I always order this stir fried in Thai Basil and toped off with a fried egg on white rice (moo krob phat bai kaphau kap khai taught) fingerlicking good!!!! But usually she’s out of the crispy porc by the time I get there. It gets really busy at lunch with mechanics etc. so just go before or after..
Don’t know if she speaks english but you will not talk a lot with food this good! Bring you appetite coz’small portion is not in her vocabulary!!!

Bangkok, Thailand>, Mar 12, 2010

The people tried to build a beautifull home for their buddha, but when it burned down they believed it was because it was ‘to much’ for him.
What was left of the original walls can still be seen when you take a look in the main building…

(At least that’s what my family told me, my grandmother used to have a shop in this soi #268, the sign at the house still hangs ’till this day, Raan Sangartid(but then in Thai))

True or not, I have always loved the story…
