Yesterday we visited the Mekong River to get in touch with the traditional way in which the locals live and do business. To get to Can Tho (city traversed by the Mekong), we took the ferry and spent the night in that city, were the nice and delicious dinner we enjoyed at a restaurant -that had a beautiful view to the river- delighted us.
As in the majority of the cities surrounded by rivers that lack adequate roads infrastructure, the means of transportation for their products and goods for sale is mainly fluvial. Moreover, all the people that live in this area rely on the river as a provider for fish and water to do laundry and for other dairy needs. The “floating” commercialization of fish and rice, as well as fruits and vegetables, is the base of the economy of this city. Besides the mosquitoes’ bites I got, for the most part I enjoyed the visit to the floating market. I loved to see how life is developed around the nature, being the Mekong River the heart of this lovely city.
