The students of Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh , who helped popularize Buddhism in the West and sold millions of books worldwide, slipped away from the Phuoc Hue temple under cover of darkness earlier this week, a spokeswoman for the monks and nuns said by telephone Thursday.

Shangri-La, China>, Dec 30, 2009
Towering like a pyramid, Meili Snow Mountain is regarded as a Holy Mountain by local Tibetans. The continuous mountain ridges feature snowy peaks and the sun throws golden lights on the low-floating clouds which form various extraordinary shapes, affording yet another splendid view!
Meili Snow Mountain, also known as Prince Snow Mountain, is located 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) northeast of Deqin County of Yunnan Province. The mountain sits on the border of Yunnan Province and Tibet, where the three famous rivers, namely the Jinsha, Mekong (Nu) and Salwen (Lancang) flow.
Known for the grandest view in Yunnan Province, Meili Snow Mountain boasts numerous snow-clad ridges and peaks, thirteen of which exceed 6,000 meters (19.685 feet) above the sea level. The most splendid view is of the Kawagebo Peak, the highest in Yunnan Province rising about 6,740 meters (22,112.86 feet). It is still a ‘virgin peak’ for no one has ever reached the top. Thus, Meili Snow Mountain is a challenge for all mountain explorers from home and abroad.
You are treated to spectacular view from all vantage points. The continuous mountain ridges feature snowy peaks and the sun throws golden lights on the low-floating clouds which form various extraordinary shapes, affording yet another splendid view! But mostly, the mountain presents itself as mystery when dense fog and clouds made it a gleaming sight to see and you could hardly resist the temptation to unveil it. You can have a panoramic view of the thirteen towering peaks from the Feilai Temple which is in the west of Deqin County.
Also known as “Prince Snow Mountain”, it is the world’s most sacred Tibetan mountain., Meili Mountain has long been famous for its Kang Karpo Peak, which, at 6,740 meters above sea level, is Yunnan’s tallest. Thirteen lesser peaks, each more than 6,000 meters above sea level, surrounds Kang Karpo Peak, which looks like it is being covered in gold as the sun rises in the east, -just as the British writer James Hilton describes in his famous book “The Lost Horizon.”
The Kang Karpo Peak is one of the eight sacred mountains worshipped by the Tibetans. Legend has it that the peak is the incarnation of a Tibetan God who helped local Tibetans drive away an evil spirit. Each autumn, thousands of Tibetans from far and near visit this legendary peak.
Although humans have long since conquered Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain, no one has yet to climb the Kang Karpo Peak, which is protected by perpendicular cliffs and a treacherous climate. Since 1902, mountaineers from China, Great Britain, the United States and Japan all have failed to conquer the summit. In 1991, 17 mountaineers from China and Japan lost their lives while trying to reach the peak, marking the greatest tragedy in the history of mountaineering in China.
The Kang Karpo Peak remains mysterious and elusive to most visitors not only for being an unvisited peak, but also because of constantly being shrouded by clouds and mist. If you’ve got the time and the patience to struggle through the haze, the gorgeous view is definitely worth it.
Koh Phangan, Thailand>, Dec 29, 2009
As this was two days ago, I’m not really sure what we did. I know that in Thailand, my brain has a 24 hour memory cycle. Once the 24th hour arrives, my brain seems to lose track of what I have experienced in the order it was in fact experienced. This by the way is not because I have a bad memory but rather due to the fact of the constantant replacement of ever new exciting experiences. In any case, I’ll consider the Dec 2. Blog my first fail, hence my latter procrastination. We decided to rent scooters since our hotel is in the middle of no where and the roads on this island seem to be pretty relaxed. We drove over to Sarjeant Terry’s hotel which coincidentally is near to ours. Terry, Chloe, Ant, and I hang around their pool for a while, swam, relaxed, etc. After sometime we decided to grab some nosh in Haad Rin. Since they have a scooter as well, we made a motorcade and head south. After grabbing some food, we all more or less spilt up. I went home and crashed into my bed. Good night at 730 ish. Sweet. Dec 29 blog: FAIL!

Ayutthaya, Thailand>, Dec 30, 2009
From Kanchanaburi I went to Ayutthaya, the ancient capital of Thailand, and the journey took about 4,5h because I had to change my bus connection in Suphanburi. The total travel costs were about 110 baht compared to a price of air-con VIP bus that costs around 400 baht. Once I arrived in the town I started to look for an accomodation just north of the provincional bus station. I checked out rooms in about 4 guesthouses before I checked in in P.U. Guesthouse that offered, in my opinion, the best value. Because I arrived in the afternoon at around 3pm, there was not much time left for sightseeing before the sunset (6pm) so that’s why I agreed to an evening boat tour offered by the guesthouse. Shortly, it was a nice experience to sit in a long-tail boat, listen to the dramatic noises of the engine and admire the palaces at the river that flows around as if an island where the historical part of Ayutthaya is mainly located

Nagiso, Japan>, Dec 27, 2009
As I was finally recovering from jet lag, my mom and I decided to take a mini trip. We invited my dad, too, but he had other plans and wanted to pass this time. So it is just two of us for this one; come to think of it, Mom and I had never traveled by ourselves!
Our destination is Tsumago-juku, which is located in a town of Nagiso. From Iida, my hometown, it is basically the other side of the mountains. Tsumago was a post town on Nakasendo. Nakasendo was one of the five major routes (sort of like highways for horses and people) developed in the 17th century. It connected Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto and had 69 post towns along the way, one of which was Tsumago.
With my mother behind the wheel, we left our house around 1 pm. As there are mountains between Iida (my hometown) and Tsumago, the road is uphill for the first half and downhill for the last half. The weather was nice, but there was some old snow around the mountain pass. The drive was uneventful, and we arrived at our inn about a hour later. We found this inn on the Internet. We initially tried to stay in the middle of the old town, but most of them were either full, or closed for the holiday season. The inn we picked is located in the walking distance from the historical area, and it was a small family-operated inn. All the rooms have a flower name as opposed to a number, and ours was Ayame (Iris). The Ayame room was a simple six-mat room (with six tatami mats); rather small, but it was clean and comfy enough for us.
We still had a plenty of time before dinner (dinner and breakfast are included in the accommodation), we decided to take a walk to the historical Tsumago-juku. Behind the inn, there is a trail which is supposed to be a part of the old Nakasendo trail. The trail is lined with bamboos and ceders, and along the way, there are small stone guardians which were probably built to protect travelers in old days. After walking on the quiet trail for ten minutes or so, we entered the historical area. It is not a big area; the street is just about 700-meter long. A Shukuba (a post town) is where travelers rested after a day of walking. There were many inns called Hatago in Shukuba, and they must have been busy with travelers. There are still some operating as inns today. And, of course, when a Daimyo (a Japanese feudal lord) was on the road, they had a special facility called Honjin for him and his entourage to stay. There was one in Tsumago also (now a museum), and it certainly looked more upscale than modest Hatago.
Since it is considered an off-season, there were not many tourists in the area. Some stores were closed for the season. I kind of liked it that way; I wouldn’t like it if the street was filled with hundreds of people. We took time walking around, had a little snack of Gohei-mochi (steamed rice on a stick; grilled with sweet miso on it) and Amazake (warm sweet sake drink; doesn’t contain much alcohol), and walked some more.
