Bali, Indonesia>, Feb 08, 2010

We ended our Bali tour in Legian and stayed in Vilarisi for 3 nights. When i was booking the place due to high season almost all other places were fully booked, so i didnt have any options but to book. the place is in a cramped up location, mostly dark in daytime also..the lift never works…breakfast below average… we got a 10 minute massage voucher which was not worth it.. 45$ per night seems to be a bit high on the price…. Location is somewhat ok, you can walk down to Jalan Legian where all the nightspots are…. The room was full of mosquitos and the swimming pool is as good as not being there… but we hardly stayed in the room..only few hrs sleep in the night so we didnt cared much…
The reception desk was sortof full of trainees or they were ignorant enough…. were not much of help.

Hanoi, Vietnam>, Feb 08, 2010

Me and my wife went on a trip to hanoi and halong bay in Dec 2009 and booked with them… A bunk for 5 $ seemed quier reasonable to us… They picked us up with a cabbie from the airport and that was cool.. The price also seemed to be reasonable for 1st timers as otherwise you will be ripped for sure…. The hostel is 15 minutes walking from hoan kiem lake and i would say the location is not much of an issue…but maybe people who want to get the feel of the old quarters should stay somewhere nearer to the lake… We were given nice bunks..the bed was very clean and comfortable… The aircon was not very good..the bathroom was spotless clean… i accept the beaded curtain was a pain for sure…. They did try to sell you their tour but i dont see anything wrong in it as long as you know what you wanna do…. They were very helpful to me when i needed some currency exchange and offered good rates… The door locking problem was with us also…. but as all our stuff was secured in the lockers so we didnt worry much. We arrived on the christmas eve and there was a crazy party on the rooftop which was quiet enjoyable….. The breakfast offered with the room was just bread and banana… The reception gals were very friendly and spoke good english apart from one local chap who i found in the night was very grumpy and arrogant…. i think it is quiet suitable if you wanna stay as a backpacker…..

VnnNews – Sales of locally assembled automobiles in Vietnam in the first month of the year picked up 76% year-on-year to over 6,960 units.

<IMG alt=”Despite the market slump last year, the auto market still noted an increase in sales volume with 119,460 units in 2009, year-on-year growth of 7%.” src=”http://www.vnnnews.net/img/2010/02//images1921139_auto.jpg” width=250 height=141 >

Despite the market slump last year, the auto market still noted an increase in sales volume with 119,460 units in 2009, year-on-year growth of 7%.

Last month, sales in all auto segments grew, in which multi-purpose and sport utility vehicles (MPV/SUV) increased 3% to 1,442 units, passenger cars 79% to more than 2,170 units and commercial vehicles 150% to 3,347 units.

Foreign and domestic manufacturers that reported a rise in sales included Toyota Vietnam, Ford Vietnam, GM Daewoo, Mercedes-Benz Vietnam, Visuco (Suzuki), Hino, Truong Hai, Vinaxuki and Vinamotor.

Toyota led the pack with 2,212 units, up 109% for 31.8% of the market, followed by GM Daewoo, 629 units, up 23%, Ford Vietnam, 373 units, up 7%, Visuco, 173 units, up 119% and Mercedes-Benz Vietnam, 159 units, up 20%.

Domestic producers Vinaxuki and Truong Hai registered 133% and 132% year-on-year increases in sales to 721 and 822 units respectively last month. Vinamotor sales leapt 200% year-on-year to 248 units.

However, total sales volume of VAMA members last month fell 53.8% in comparison with December, according to the association.

The auto industry this year will face extra difficulties as vehicle registration fees will be adjusted up to 10%-12% from the previous 5%-6%. Automakers and auto importers early this year announced new prices since the VAT on automobiles was doubled from 5% to 10% on January 1.

Despite the market slump last year, the auto market (from VAMA) still noted an increase in sales volume with 119,460 units in 2009, year-on-year growth of 7%.

Two segments that were major drivers for growth last year were passenger cars which grew by 47% year-on-year and MPV/SUVs which rose 3%.

Last year, automakers attributed the improvement in car consumption to the Government’s proactive measures such as 50% VAT and 50% ownership tax reductions. The auto registration fee was down to 5-6% of the list price, boosting sales and helping the industry cope with the local economic slowdown resulting from the global recession. But in 2010 some tax incentives have been removed.

Udo Loersch, general director of Mercedes-Benz Vietnam and vice chairman of VAMA, said that last year Mercedes-Benz Vietnam also posted a new record of 3,400 cars, with an 80% increase for passenger cars. This shows demand for cars, especially luxury brands, in Vietnam is high and increasing.

However, taxes for autos (VAT & registration fee) have been doubled. This will create significant challenges for auto makers and customers. “It is not easy to predict the market but we will hope for an increase in 2010. Another challenge is the dificulty to get loans for the customers, but here we expect the Government will find solutions to improve the situation,” Loersch said.

Meanwhile, Honda Vietnam forecast that the auto market this year would decrease 10%-20% year-on-year. Toyota Vietnam forecast the auto market in 2010 would reduce because of the new taxes and fees.

* The import value of automobiles in the first month of this year reached only US$45 million, a 76.4% decrease compared to December, according to the General Statistics Office (GSO).

The country imported 2,500 automobiles, down 77.3% against the previous month. As many as 11,000 automobiles worth US$192 million were imported in December.

The GSO said the sharp decrease was a common trend as the first two months of the year often saw a sharp reduction in car imports due to decreasing demand from the domestic market.

Industry insiders also attributed the sharp decrease to the impact of the Government’s decision to remove tax incentives from the auto industry. After months of enjoying a VAT and car registration discount, car buyers now have to pay additional charges that are estimated to increase the cost of buying a car by roughly 10-12%.

Automakers said the domestic automobile market would suffer over the first few months of the year due to the higher costs. However, it was expected to rebound at the end of the year so that total sales would match those of last year.

Last year, the country recorded imports of roughly 76,300 automobiles worth more than US$1.17 billion, up 49.4% and 12.6% respectively from 2008, the GSO reported.

Industry insiders forecast that automobile imports in February would continue to drop.

Government agencies moved energetically to prepare the nation’s first formal complaint to the World Trade Organization, and are hopeful of success.

Processing shrimps for export.

Earlier this month, some local newspapers reported that the Government has filed a complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on behalf of Vietnamese shrimp exporters, protesting the US imposition of anti-dumping taxes on our frozen shrimp. Deputy Trade Minister Le Danh Vinh talked with Tuoi Tre about this.

Vietnam sues US for imposing anti-dumping taxes

Will Vietnam sue US DOC?

We can take the Americans to the WTO court – and win!

Anti-dumping lawsuits: Vietnam needs to learn ‘the rules of the game’

Le Danh Vinh, Deputy Minister of Trade: It is very normal for a country to bring commercial conflicts with another country to the WTO. Many countries have done it, even when they have close and friendly relations.  One reason Vietnam joined the WTO is so we can protect our interests via the WTO’s mechanism.

“After VASEP (The Association of Vietnamese Seafood Exporters and Producers) proposed that the Government bring the matter of the USA’s imposing anti-dumping duties on Vietnamese shrimp to the WTO, we have moved energetically. On February 2, Vietnam officially initiated the case.

Tuoi Tre: Some news agencies said that VASEP proposed the WTO complaint a long time ago. Why didn’t the Government act until February 2?

Deputy Minister Vinh: VASEP sent its petition to the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry early in 2009. To protect the interests of Vietnamese enterprises and exercise of its rights at the WTO, MoIT and related agencies diligently researched the case. This is Vietnam’s first complaint to the WTO. We must take care to do it correctly.

A number of ministries, including Finance, Justice, Foreign Affairs and Agriculture and Rural Development have helped MoIT to analyze the case. In mid-2009, based on the ministries’ recommendation, the government agreed in principal to file a complaint at the WTO at the request of VASEP.

However, many technical issues still had to be carried out before initiatiing the case, for example consulting with the WTO Centre for Legal Assistance, hiring lawyers and preparing evidence. The dossiers for a WTO lawsuit are lengthy, so we needed time to prepare them.

TT: What is the procedure? How long will it take?

Vinh: We will have to follow WTO’s mechanism.  The first step is direct discussion between the parties.  Vietnam’s representative at the WTO sent our request for discussion of the matter according to WTO rules to the UN Trade Representative. The US has announced that they received the request.

If the case cannot be settled during this 60 day procedure, Vietnam will ask the WTO to step in, and at that time WTO would perform necessary steps for a formal hearing and decision.  It is rather like a trial; if the losing party appeals the decision, it may take some considerable time to finish the case according to WTO regulations.

TT: Lawyers are very important to the success of a legal action. Will Vietnam rely on foreign or local lawyers?

Vinh: We’ll make a careful choice. The lawyers who defend Vietnam’s interests must be good at English and international law. It is highly possible that we will choose a foreign lawyer for this case if it can’t be settled in the discussion phase.

TT: What do you think about Vietnam’s chances to win in this lawsuit?

Some experts recently said that Vietnam has a 60 to 90 percent chance of victory.  It is premature and subjective to reach such a conclusion. The two sides have just started the first step. This case also has complicated technical factors so it is difficult to make an early statement. However, before filing Vietnam’s complaint, our ministries carefully considered and analysed related issues.  Judging that we’ve a good chance to prevail, we have taken action. If we succeed, Vietnamese enterprises will not have to pay anti-dumping duties and all the red tape that compliance entails.

Leh, India>, Aug 21, 2009

I stayed at Oriental Guest House on my trip to Leh .:) well i went and called up all the hotels there to find out a place to stay. As we were group of 6. We decided on getting 3 rooms :). and i got this highly recommended on couple of places . So i called them up and thought of checking the price and place :) the place was some km from Leh main city. It was close to shanti stupa(cuglamsar) and close to airport . After getting down from the airport and taking the cab.170 Rs for the cab from airport to the guest house. The books were already done so it went fine. The place was neatly done.
The exteriors looked like a ladakhi house. The three rooms were just fine tough a bit small but they had clean bed and bed sheets :),the bathrooms were also clean. And best part they had hot water running :)
And what else breakfast was included in the cost :)…
They had a kitchen garden and i was impressed with it cause it boasted of a apple trea.a good amount of vegis and a nice lawn with flowers that is actually a rare sight in Leh :)
They had a nice library and cable too..and a dining are. tough i didn’t dine there and had only breakfast which i was not that impressed :(.
They could have done better but again what else you want for rs 500 per night :).

so my reviews well in Leh city there are few places better than this.the location is not that far from Leh city.and place offers a cheap stay while in Leh and a spectacular view of Shanti Stupa.
So i recommend it to people who simply want to go and stay decently there.
I am adding the website down below.ther pics are tere in my Leh album.
